5 HR Practices Worth Refreshing
1. Have you set aside time to conduct annual performance reviews in 2026?
The annual review is just the starting point – not the finish line. Take the time to check your tools and timeline to ensure you are prepared for an effective evaluation process.
2. If it isn’t documented, did it happen?
Good documentation is one of HR’s most important tools for supporting consistent and fair employment decisions. Whether it’s performance feedback, attendance concerns, training/coaching provided, or policy violations that occur.
3. Setting attendance expectations this fall.
As summer comes to an end, now is a good time to remind employees of your attendance expectations, call-off procedures, and scheduling policies – and make sure managers are applying them consistently.
4. A good time for a refresher on accommodations.
Manager should know that an accommodation request doesn’t always come in the form of a formal request or use specific language. An employee simply sharing that they are having difficulty performing their job because of a medical condition may be enough to start the conversation.
When a conversation arises: listen, avoid making assumptions, and involve HR promptly. The goal is to engage in an interactive process to understand the employee’s needs and determine whether a reasonable accommodation is available.
5. Communication
Revisit opportunities for learning and professional development. Development can be accomplished by formal training — or it can be as simple as dedicating time to cross-training, mentoring, stretch assignments, job shadowing, or building new skills. Investing in employee development supports both individual growth and organizational goals—and can help strengthen engagement and retention.
