It has been announced that California’s new minimum wage will be $17.40/hour effective January 1, 2027.
In addition, California employers must ensure that exempt employees earn at least the minimum annual salary of $72,384. However, meeting the salary threshold alone does not qualify an employee as exempt. The position the employee fills must also satisfy the applicable duties test.
California wage requirements can vary by location and industry, so please review any applicable city or county minimum wage ordinances, industry-specific wage rates (including healthcare and fast food), and special exemption rules that may apply to certain professions such as physicians, computer professionals, and outside sales employees.
California employment rules are complex, so if you need assistance, contact us today to confirm which wage requirements apply to your employees!
