Back To School: Accommodating Employees With Kids Going Back To School in Sacramento, CA
Even as adults some of us cringe at the back to school supplies in the stores while some of us celebrate and count down the days. Whether we like it or not, it is that time of year. Likely you have employees with children returning to school.
Why should you care, well why shouldn’t you?
Returning to school shifts the dynamic of a household and can impact your employee on many levels, it may be more difficult to get to work on time due to missing shoes and lunches to make. There are pick up and drop off schedules to navigate. There will be homework after work, which let’s be honest is dreaded equally or more by parents than kids. Schedule challenges with teacher conferences, performances, field trips, projects to complete and more.
Just be aware and where possible a bit flexible on occasion. Consider using this as a teambuilding activity; facilitate a backpack drive, teacher wish list drive or contact your local school to find out what is needed. Consider whether you offer employees to come in late or leave early on the first day back to school to allow for pick up or drop off on this special day for the kiddos.

California has mandatory School Appearance Leave and School Activities Leave. School appearance leave is applicable to all employers and allows a parent unpaid, protected time away from work to attend school disciplinary matters, written notice from the principal can be required. School Activities leave applies to employers with 25 or more employees and allows parents up to 40 hours per year of unpaid, protected time away from work to find, enroll, or re-enroll a child in school or with a licensed child care provider, to participate in activities of the school or licensed child care provider and to tend to a child care provider or school emergency.
